Obtaining car insurance before looking to buy an auto?

Terrance asked:

What’s the best way to get auto insurance coverage before looking to buy a car? In other words, I need some kind of coverage in order to drive a friend’s car/or family car to find a car to buy. Do I call an insurance agent first, or the licensing bureau for a temporary permit of some sort, or what? Thanks

Ask your friend and family to check to see if they have “permissive use” on their auto insurance policy. If they do, then you are allowed to drive their car with their permission and you are covered.

Tell them to check with their insurance agent or company.

Since insurance goes with cars, not with drivers, without a car you won’t need insurance.

If you looking to buy a car, contact an independent agent and tell them just that. They will gather all your information except the car you haven’t bought yet. When you find one you are going to buy, call the agent, give him the year, make, model and VIN and pick up your insurance card on the way to get the car.

I recommend an online insurance quote. It’s free and generally hassle free.

    Good Luck.
