Why do people in the US waste money on car insurance?

Right L asked:

There are 5 states such as California where 25% of the public has NO car insurance…while the rest of the country has an average of 7% uninsured. Obviously no one is enforcing insurance so…why bother getting insurance at all. Isn’t it cheaper to have none..and more un-American to have it? After all, Americans generally think they should not have to pay for anything, so why pay for anything at all?

Having insurance is like having a fire extingusher, it’s the kind of thing you spend money on in the hopes that you never actually have to use it.

california has a higher rate of people without insurance because of the number of illegal immigrants. it may be cheaper to have no insurance, but it also means more problems if there are accidents. someone that has a lower income may not be able to pay for damages in a car accident, which would pretty much mean that the other person in the accident is going to get screwed over.

insurance laws are important as it means that personal property is being protected. everyone wants to have their personal effects replaced when it gets damaged, and insurance means that you will get your damages fixed

Its the law, so we must have it. Not only that, but you are protecting yourself by carrying it. Saying that it isn’t worth getting since no one else is getting it is ridiculous. The main reason to get it is because some uninsured fool will run into you, be totally at fault, and sue you because they are only interested in money. Without insurance, you have no one to back you. With insurance, you have access to lawyers and professionals that will help you prove you are not at fault. Of course, that is only if you have a good insurance company.

Having car insurance IS the law, the problem is that the law makes you buy insurance from a private company.
If the LAW says you need to be insured than i believe they need to be the ones providing insurance, not some private party who rips us all off like crazy.
It’s not like health insurance where your not obligated to buy it.

    HA!!!

You must not live in New Jersey…..auto insurance is MANDATORY. Without insurance, you cannot register your car or get it inspected. If you are caught without insurance, you driver’s license can be suspended on the spot and your car confiscated.

Every responsible car owner should carry insurance. It protects him – and those he might run in to.

Drivers who don’t carry insurance are deadbeats.

  • No they don’t. Most of the people in California without insurance are illegal immigrants. And giving them licenses would only cause more deaths since it would put millions of new drivers on all ready congested freeways.

By law, most states require you to have it. Now I agree with you, car insurance is un-American and a huge scam. The reason why 25% of California’s resident’s don’t have it is because it is too expensive. My wife inquired as to why we would have to pay so much more for insurance if we lived in California. She was told that California had “too many uninsured and underinsured drivers” and that was why rates were higher. When I was moved out to California by the government I refused to change my car insurance to California because it was going to cost my wife and I nearly $800 dollars more to drive shorter distances to work. Guess what? Those bastards actually notified us three months after we moved saying they knew that we were in California and that we would have to pay the California rate. I was livid and demanded to know why I should have to pay outrageous rates because bumbs and illegal aliens didn’t have insurance. I never received a satisfactory answer. The best they could do was telling me to contact the state government. Lucky for us, the rates in California dropped about that time. We only ended up paying about $200 more.

You are wrong about enforcement. If you actually have a job and make money, they will make sure you not only have insurance, but that you pay the greatest amount possible. If you are a bumb or an illegal alien, nothing is going to happen. You don’t have anything, so they won’t come after you. Heck, if you are an illegal alien, they probably won’t even bother deporting your ass either. They don’t call it “The People’s Republic of California” for nothing.

bac_1976 – One problem with your analogy. No one pays every six months to have a fire extinguisher.

Unlike your part of the world were you sit for hours milking a cup of coffee for hours than get behind the wheel and your king of the road and every sec. counts But I think your to young to drive

  • All-One says:

Many think a no fault approach would work better, but as usual laws have been past to screw the working man, and make the wealthy even more wealthy.
That is why I do not understand. your last statement. We have depleted our treasury to the benefit of others. WWII, and the marshal plan was the beginning of that. and it has continued to this day. Of course the “military industrial complex”, is the greatest benefactor from the wars that are occurring now. That would of course include the wealthy in Europe, as well as the U.S.. If you would get your head out of the warm place you have it, you would be able to see that the system is designed to take money from the pockets of the working class and put it in the hands of the ruling class.

  • its like haven an alarm for a firer better to be safe rather then sorry.

  • Tony S says:

Keep that in mind when you get into a car accident as a result of someone else’s stupidity, and they swear that they will compensate you for your loss and promise to pay for your repairs.

Most states have laws where they will suspend your registration if you don’t have insurance. As for it being cheaper, think about this, if you cause an accident do you want to pay for someone else hospital bill out of your own pocket? I think not.
